COURSE 1

Introduction to craniofacial functional medicine

Although we repeatedly hear that orthodontics is an evidence based profession, we still cannot answer the fundamental questions. Is malocclusion really a pathology? If not, why do we treat our patients? What is the evidence based etiology of the malocclusion? What is the evidence based diagnostic procedure? Why do we have so many different treatment opportunities for one individual and how can we select the best treatment?

There have been many significant changes in technology, basic sciences and the legal environment. The time has come to a real paradigm shift.

This is a foundation course for those who want to deliver health centered dental or orthodontic treatments, or even want to participate in a craniofacial functional teamwork.

The course will cover the following topics

  • Why is health the only possible treatment objective?
  • Why do we need a new definition for the orthodontic specialty?

  • Introduction of the main treatment sub-categories in the orthodontic specialty
  • Introduction to health centered functional orthodontics
  • Introduction to craniofacial functional medicine
  • Organising the team. Selecting collaborator specialties

COURSE 2

Introduction to early health centered functional orthodontics

After the completion of the fundamental course this is no longer a question if we need to treat malfunctioning kids as early as we detect any sign of the malfunction. Instead of early orthodontics we now think in terms of early functional intervention. As part of this interdisciplinary functional teamwork early health centered functional orthodontics has a certain role.

This course will introduce you into the decision making process. What are the treatment objectives of this early health centered orthodontic treatment? There is an ever more important question. What are the best appliances, techniques that fulfil the requirements? There are professional, technical and practice management considerations that we all address during the course. Dr Hermann will introduce a technique that works very effectively in this age group even in treating non-compliance patients.

The course will cover the following topics

  • Introduction to pediatric sleep disorders
  • Introduction to the concept of functional disconnection syndrome
  • Early orthodontics, or early functional intervention?
  • Diagnostics
  • Treatment planning. Interdisciplinary treatment plan, planning orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics
  • Introduction to the modified ALF appliance
  • Treatment sequence
  • Bonding
  • Case management
  • Troubleshooting
  • Functional training
  • Retention

After the completion of this course participants will be able to practice early health centered functional orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. The participants will be able to formulate a health centered treatment plan, order appliances and manage their cases.
